Artie welcomed R&B powerhouse, Usher to the Quiet Storm recently. She got a chance to talk to the Grammy Award winner about his seventh album, Looking for Myself . The R&B crooner described his new work as a self-analysis of his emotions that required him to do some real soul-searching.
The album’s lead single, “Climax” is an ethereal fusion of electric dance and seductive R&B soul. This stirring ballad, masterfully produced by Diplo, sets the stage for its dramatic music video. Usher describes the video as “more of an acting piece” that deals with the decisions involved when a relationship reaches a pinnacle.
The dancing dynamo expressed that the title, Looking for Myself , “depicts the conflict that we have on a day-to-day basis”. This heart-felt new album is yet another showcase of the artist’s evolution in the music industry. He mentioned how important it is, as a musician, “to try to find a way to exist in a time when music has obviously matured in a different direction and yet not lose the true essence of what soul is”.
Usher humbly separates the highlights of his career from his greatest accomplishment in life. He says that the highlight of his career is every time he is able to put out a new album. Just like the perfect father, he notes the births of his two sons as his greatest accomplishments.
The new album reveals another side of the multi-faceted performer, who claims the approach for this album was predicated on his exposure and his emotions. Looking for Myself explores music in terms of dance, sound, and vibe. He says his objective was, “to make sure that no one was left out”.
Usher is scheduled to play Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film, Hands of Stone (scheduled to be released in 2013), he plans on touring later this year if not next, traveling, and raising his children.
Usher’s new album Looking for Myself is in stores now.
