See It, Rent It, Or Skip It: “Silver Linings Playbook”
Written for the screen and directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter), Silver Linings Playbook is an off-beat romantic comedy based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name.
Bradley Cooper (Limitless) plays Patrick, recently released from the loony bin and living back with his parents. Determined to rebuild his relationship with his wife, Pat embarks upon a transformative journey where he meets free-spirited Tiffany played by Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone).
Amidst a familial obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles, competitive dancing, and routine jogs around the block in a garbage bag; the heart of the story is found in the unconventional bond between Pat and Tiffany.
The Hangover heartthrob and The Hunger Games lead are assembled alongside a great cast to explore the world of ordinary people; with their obsessions, anxieties, and distress. Each actor is perfectly cast in this film and both Cooper and Lawrence deliver first-rate performances. The two stars have unspeakable chemistry.
Robert De Niro is delightful as Pat’s father while Jackie Weaver shines as Patrick’s mother; stealing scene after scene with earnest physicality and hilarious facial expressions. Both Chris Tucker and Julia Stiles make appearances in supporting roles.
Currently receiving positive critical reaction, Silver Linings Playbook premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival where it won the People’s Choice Award.
Silver Linings Playbook hits theaters just in time for Thanksgiving on November 21. So if you’re looking for some quirky holiday humor I say SEE IT.
