Jerold Lee-Shakeem Redd was born on August 7, 1991, in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was raised by his parents, but grew up in a single parent home with his mother and brother. At a very young age, he was introduced to hip hop by his parents. They consistently played all flavors of rap music in his presence. By the time Jerold was 9, he began rapping and recording on a karaoke machine. Jerold performed in local talent shows, family reunions, community parks, even yard sales. It was at this time, he began to refer to himself as the One Man Orchestra.
In 2001, his mother decided to relocate in search of a better job opportunity to take care of he and his brother. Charlotte, North Carolina became the chosen city and it was here where Jerold’s heart for hip hop was set on fire. He graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 2009 and began recording with Fly Squad that same year. He also worked with David Sparks, an original member of Ready For The World. Mr. Sparks showed a strong interest in Jerold’s voice and rap styles. Mr. Sparks apprenticed Jerold’s ability to engineer his own music. It was at this time, Jerold decided to change his stage name from One Man Orchestra to simply his own name J.Redd.
J.Redd has several influences when it comes to his music. Some of those people are T.I., Ludacris, Nelly, and Rocko, just to name a few. Another influence is Prince. He was very fond of Prince’s ability to pretty much do it all and by himself; hence, a one-man orchestra.
In 2010, J.Redd released his first mixtape, One Man Orchestra. He didn’t receive the fan base he expected, so he moved on to the next one. His second mixtape, #TurnUpTime, was released on April 21, 2012. This turnout put motivation back into his soul as he now had a fan base and a little more respect. J.Redd met DJ Candy, formerly of Konvict Music, to receive consultation on his music. After hearing his single, I’m In Love With Money, DJ Candy immediately wanted to bring J.Redd onto his radio show and be the first deejay to formally introduce and release the single live. At this point, J.Redd felt his music and life was maturing; therefore, he created and released his third mixtape, Ride for Mine, on July 27, 2012. In honor of his dying maternal grandmother, he decided her birthday would be the release for this street album.
